Mudras for Children
E-BOOKLET
Children love practicing these simple, fun, portable and effective hand gestures called, “mudras.” They are like mini yoga poses for your hands.Â
Mudras come from the Yoga tradition and are one of many techniques used to develop awareness and self-regulation. Mudras are hand gestures that tune us to and direct the subtle energies of the body.
This e-booklet includes an introduction to mudras, how and why to practice mudras, and instructions for 10 simple mudras suitable for children.
The energetic body is a subtle yet complex system. Many wellness modalities from the East use knowledge of the body’s energy channels to facilitate health and healing.Â
Even if you’re not familiar with the term “mudras”, you have probably seen…or maybe even practiced…one yourself. Jnana mudra is the one that comes to mind when most people picture someone meditating in lotus pose – with their first fingers touching thumbs. Â
Putting your hands together in front of your heart in prayer is a form of mudra too.
Everyone, including children, can benefit from the positive impact on the mind and attitude. Just as children enjoy moving their bodies into yoga postures, known as “asanas”, they also enjoy crafting their hands into these interesting shapes known as “mudras”.
These hand gestures can facilitate self-regulation skills and awareness. Mudras may help children quickly feel calm, centered and assured. They can also help cultivate a strong, clear and balanced mind. Each mudra has its own effect and its own healing capacity. They are like mini yoga poses for your hands.
Today, children are bombarded by stimulation. Their minds are required to process a tremendous amount of input with little rest. Meditation is one of the best ways to give the mind a rest and mudras are a wonderful way to facilitate the one-pointed concentration that leads to meditation.
There are literally hundreds of different mudras.  However, not all mudras are suitable for children. Some are too expansive or destabilizing for young bodies and minds. Like acupuncture, they quickly and powerfully direct or unblock energy. Mudras that are suitable for children are those that help them feel stable, focused and balanced.  These are the mudras shared in this booklet.Â
Whether you're a parent, teacher, or caregiver, "Mudras for Children" is a resource that brings balance, mindfulness, and delight.
