Top Tips for Creating a Relaxing Yoga Space for Kids
Nov 21, 2017
Fostering a passion for Yoga in children at an early age will give them the tools they need to thrive. Yoga gives kids (and adults!) the ability to deal with the challenges they face in their day-to-day lives. It brightens their spirits, bodies and minds.
Yoga classes in your community are a great way to start. Another way you can encourage interest in the practice is to create a dedicated Yoga space within the home. Here are our top tips for creating this space and helping your children get the most out of the time they spend practicing Yoga.
Choose the Right Spot
When the weather allows, practicing outside is ideal! This has the added benefit of providing your children an easy outlet to connect with nature and the world around them. Avoid doing Yoga outdoors if it is too windy (makes balancing and focus more difficult), or you can’t escape direct sunlight in the middle of the day. If you have to bundle up, it’s too cold for Yoga outside.
If you’re choosing an indoor space, you’ll want as much natural light as possible. The ideal floor surface is soft enough to be comfortable yet firm enough to support balancing poses and perform proper asanas. Wood flooring with an underlayment or luxury vinyl is ideal. However, anything from concrete to shag carpet can work.
It doesn’t matter where your space is, as long as it makes you feel calm and safe when you enter it.
Encourage Good Feng Shui
Whether you have the luxury of a separate room or are creating a “Yoga corner”, it’s important that the space is quiet and clutter-free. It’s important to remove (or at least turn off) electronic devices and create an environment that is as calm as possible.
A great way of doing this is to focus on achieving positive Feng Shui throughout your home. Ensure that you have a water focal point in your main living space (a tabletop fountain or a calming fish tank are simple and aesthetically pleasing) and create calm in the room with plenty of wood and earth tones.
Set Up the Right Props
You don’t need any props to practice Yoga. It’s one of the beautiful things about the practice.
However, some useful props you could include in your perfect Yoga space include: Yoga mat, mat cleaner and towel, blocks/bolsters/straps for modifying poses, blanket and meditation pillow, beanie toys and eye bags.
From a decorative point of view, you may wish to add a deity statue or painting, low maintenance plants, candles (if your child is old enough to be around them safely), and tinghsa or singing bowls. These items will help you to create the right calming environment for your special Yoga space.
Letting your child help choose the props and décor will make it more engaging for them. Once they have a passion for Yoga, it’s likely to stay with them for life. The benefits of regular Yoga and meditation are so significant – it’s a wonderful gift to give to your children!
