Back to School and back to the Benefits of Yoga For Children
Sep 21, 2017
We have heard from many teachers and other school officials who are inquiring about the practice of Yoga for their students. One principal contacted us looking for a Yoga teacher in her school. The kids had been taught Yoga for some time and then the program ended. She noticed a change in the behavior of her students ("not good" she said) and is interested in getting her kids back into Yoga.
Everyone benefits from better breathing habits, useful strategies for self-regulation and sure ways to de-stress. Whether preparing for a test, a football game or a date, Yoga can help kids and young adults arrive feeling balanced, strong, calm and clear.
A group of kids I have been teaching for a couple of years now have gathered again for our fall classes. We had a break for summer and are now in our third week of classes. These 6-12 year-olds cherish their Yoga class and appreciate the feeling of serenity they now know how to cultivate for themselves. As we grow together, we learn more poses, explore a broader range of practices and play more games. It's been summery warm here in Chicago so we have been able to play outside in the open field of grass by the lake. As coolness then cold comes over the land, we will draw in and explore the more quiet and contemplative practices.
