Themed Yoga Lesson Plans
Are you looking for ideas for a creative Yoga class for children? Do you want to incorporate engaging Yoga "play" into your home, classroom or therapeutic setting? Then our themed lesson plans are just what you need.
Each plan is thoughtfully structured following the same class plan outline we teach the students in our teacher training program. You'll get practices for breath awareness, warming up, asanas, transitioning to quiet, meditation and relaxation - along with the games, creative movement and activities that make Yoga engaging and fun for children of all ages. All this is cleverly sequenced to follow a specific theme and intention. You'll also get a list of suggested supplies for the class and additional resources where appropriate.
Use the plans as is or as thought starters and supplements to your own ideas. Each one is chock full of fun practices that can easily be made into more than one class, or many different practices at home or school.
You'll get the themed/child friendly name of each pose and practice along with the Sanskrit name where applicable. Detailed descriptions of how to achieve proper alignment in each pose are not included. You'll need a basic understanding of Yoga to use these plans.
Currently there are four Yoga lesson plans available -
- Earth Day - focused on earth/groundedness practices, different kinds of energy and endangered species
- Giving Thanks - a "journey" themed plan with a healthy dose of gratitude practices
- Patanjali's Yoga - a fun and engaging way to teach the 8 limbs of Yoga
- Spooky Fun - a Halloween themed practice
Check back often as more themed lesson plans will be ready soon. Or subscribe to our newsletter and we'll keep you informed of all the available resources and opportunities. Save over 50% by becoming a member of our ohana.
Here's what a couple of people had to say about the plan they received -
I just had to email you to thank you from the bottom of my heart! This class was a super duper hit....so incredibly creative!....so incredibly wisely sequenced and so very much as I would have done, except that for me, it would have taken a week (probably longer) to create! I thank you so much for this amazing and fun class and as I am new to teaching and very busy with kids and adult classes, this was such a help and I appreciate such kind generosity!" ~ Catherine M., Canada
Love that you are so thorough on the structure - and it keeps developing. If I may compliment - the LP are some of the most profound I have seen - and also they are well organized in font and size." - Emmamaria V., Denmark
Earth Day
Earth Day (annually celebrated on April 22) is a day to recommit to our responsibility towards our home and reconnect with the natural elements and all the creatures large and small that live within our fragile eco-system.
While created for Earth Day, this plan can easily be used year-round. You can focus the plan on being grounded and stable, like the earth. Or you may choose to focus on the various forms of energy the earth provides. Endangered species can also be a topic of focus, making the plan itself something you can reuse and recycle! Symbols next to each class element indicate these different aspects of the practice.
Giving Thanks
The original Thanksgiving celebration that we honor in the United States was the culmination of an epic “Hero’s Journey”. This lesson plan explores the Pilgrims journey to the New World with a healthy dose of gratitude practices sprinkled in that can be used at any time of the year, in any country. Includes a short video clip, a fun game, a creative project and a guided relaxation in addition to the themed asanas.
This is a heart opening, strengthening and stabilizing practice suitable for children ages 5 and up as well as families practicing together.
This lesson plan was given for free to all members of our Ohana. All our members receive 4 free lesson plans a year in addition to many other benefits. Please visit our member page for more information.
Patanjali's Yoga
Yoga is the science of right living. The 8 limbs of Yoga show us the way. This lesson plan facilitates the teaching of the history and philosophy of Yoga in a fun and engaging way. The 8 limbs of Yoga are numbered and highlighted throughout the Asana, Games, Transition to Quiet, Meditation and Relaxation sections.
This is a grounding and quieting practice intended for children over the age of 8 who have been practicing regularly for at least 6 sessions.
Spooky Fun Lesson Plan
Kids love Halloween and there are many wonderful Yoga poses and games that help us celebrate this colorful, creative and creepy day.
This plan is great for children 4-11 years old and families practicing together. It is based on a traditional sequence and the overall effect is balancing.
Includes all the elements of a complete Yoga practice along with several fun games and a delightful guided relaxation.
