Bio: Elyse is currently a Special Education Teacher in the public school system, teaching Yoga clubs for both students and teachers after school. She has recently graduated from the 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training program through Tejas in Chicago. This program, led by Jim Bennitt and James Tennant, not only prepared her to teach the physical postures, but also emphasized the importance of breathing and meditation techniques, Yoga philosophy, and the principals of Ayurveda that parallel the science of Yoga. Daily practice has lead to a life in remission, free of symptoms of a previously diagnosed digestive disorder. With the relief, there is much more happiness; deeper breaths, time for joy and gratitude within the experiences of each day. Elyse's intention is to share Yoga in an accessible way. She hopes students can explore, feel comfortable, and collect strategies to feel the same benefits she has felt through her own practice: strength, balance and ease in the physical body and mind.

Bio: I grew up in Chicago and have lived in New Mexico for the past twenty years. My husband Jeff and I have two children, ages 23 and 26. I have been a classroom teacher for the past twenty-five years, teaching children in grades 1-5 in Chicago, Philadelphia and New Mexico. I currently teach a class of first through third graders in a small private school in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where I have been for the past seventeen years. I have devoted my life to working with children in many capacities in and out of the classroom. I have tutored privately, have spent many years teaching swimming and continue to direct a summer camp program for my school. I am also the yoga instructor for my school. Sharing the benefits of yoga with children and their families is a very important part of my work with children. I have been practicing yoga on and off for close to thirty years, first teaching myself from books. Over the last five years, I have developed a very dedicated practice both at home and in studio classes. While my yoga practice began primarily as a physical practice for strength and flexibility, my practice has deepened over the years to include a spiritual and meditative practice. My experience with breast cancer really paved the way for me to embrace not only the physical but also the spiritual healing that yoga can provide, as I continued to practice yoga and meditation throughout my treatment. As someone with congenital scoliosis, I have also experienced the ways in which yoga can be amazingly transformative, both in a physical sense and in the sense of developing a positive and compassionate connection to my body. My personal experience with yoga, combined with my work with children, has made me passionate about bringing the physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of yoga to children and their families. I believe that the healing and empowering benefits of yoga can be an important part of bringing peace, healing and well-being to our world and especially to our youth, who are often bombarded by the daily stresses, expectations and hectic schedules of our society. Lest one think that I am always SO serious about life, I also have several fun hobbies and passions. I have been an avid runner for many years and have enjoyed training for a variety of distance events (OK, seems serious to some, FUN for me). I also love swimming and take every chance I can get to spend time in pools and by rivers and lakes. I also love to ride my bike, especially with my husband, and we love to traverse the roads of New Mexico on two wheels. Hiking and camping are a big part of my recreation, and I'm lucky to be able to enjoy this with my whole family when my grown kids are visiting. I am an animal-lover! We've had many dogs in our lives, as well as pygmy goats, zebra finches, fish and various reptiles, even my kids' pet rats! I love to go bird-watching too. And...I love to laugh and play - one of the reasons I love to work with children, who encourage me not to take myself too seriously!

Bio: I began my journey with Iyengar yoga in 1998 to help rehabilitate a knee after undergoing surgery. A long-time athlete, I had experimented with various sports but didn’t find a holistic form of movement until I discovered yoga. Yoga soon became a way of life. After moving to San Francisco, I began the teacher training program at the IYSF to pass on her enthusiasm to others. Yoga prepared me for, carried me through, and beyond my two pregnancies. My two children are now a big part of rediscovering all dimensions of yoga on a daily basis. I combine my former work as an educator with a PhD in German language and literature with the belief that movement aids in intellectual development. I have taught at Penn State University and was the Head of English at the German-American School in Menlo Park, Ca. After moving to Chicago, I functioned as School Director at German International School Chicago. Since finding yoga, I strive for mindful interaction through experiential learning, which is extremely enriching with children. I am 200 RYT certified, teaching at my studio, Yoga Niche and locations throughout Chicago. I have trained in India with the Iyengars and in Chicago. I am currently becoming certified for trauma sensitive yoga with Warriors at Ease to build resilience to life’s changes through mindfulness.
